Ideology - further reading and tasks

The World of Mockingjay

Panem is being controlled by a group of people who want the society to live by arduous rules. These rulers want to create ideologies in their society that would give them a superior and untouchable appearance. They want the people of Panem to realise who their superiors are and how significant they are to their lives. Not only do the authorities of Panem control people's lives and their thinking but also the resources are heavily controlled and the people are seriously struggling. Also, the article emits a negative vibe on President Snow (in charge) when capitalist  ideology is mentioned. It talks about him using the media to manipulate the people of each district mainly to prevent or possibly distract rebels from fighting back. An example of this is 'The Hunger Games' which is aired live on television and the previous year events are also displayed for everyone of each district to watch. Mr Snow wants his audience to believe it's an event for entertainment and they should accept it in their society because it's his way of thinking. This is done through the media which influences the audience into believing Mr Snow's ideology.

They live

The four accepted ideological beliefs in western society are: money equals happiness, consumer goods equals fulfilment, marriage/family/children equals happiness and obedience/work equals fulfilment. Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggests those in power maintain their control through consent and not through the use of force. He argues ideologies are constructed through ideas and elite social groups are able to dominate through ideas and not through strength and fear. Althusser's theory offers an understanding how we are controlled through ideology. He believes that ideology is the greatest material power and dominates our day to day lives through two key forms of control: Repressive state control (Government, police) and Ideological State Apparatuses (Church, media). Ideology of consumerism is about being proud of who you are and trying to do the best for yourself. Yes, I believe we are controlled by the media because we have all believed something from the news or some form of media. For example, we are influenced by the weathermen and we would wear appropriate clothing for the weather he or she has informed us about. Advertising has influenced the way people think and has reinforced representations (women doing the cleaning, so they are advertised doing the dishes). People with power (power equals money) are sometimes able to create these ideologies and representations.

Ideology

P34 - The Hunger Games

Panem is based in America which has a strange way of living. It is separated into thirteen different Districts. The article emits a negative vibe on President Snow when ideology is mentioned. It talks about him using the media to manipulate the people of each district mainly to prevent or possibly distract rebels from fighting back. An example of this is 'The Hunger Games' which is aired live on television and the previous year events are also displayed for everyone of each district to watch. It entices the citizens because it is a way for youngsters to learn new skills in case they are selected (from their district) for next year's event and for the adults to watch in fear for the innocent teenagers being slaughtered by each other. Mr Snow wants his audience to believe it's an event for entertainment and they should accept it in their society because it's his way of thinking, One boy and one girl are selected for the event. For District 12, Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen were their warriors. These two were successful in the Hunger Games event and became really close and were televised as a couple. However, Peeta was tortured and his memories change which lead to him believing Katniss is a target. This article mainly talks about the manipulation on the people of this ludicrous society.

P48 - They Live

This article is about our thinking and how it has influenced as to judge in certain ways. It talks about us being controlled and we can look at films as an example because we are forced to believe certain things in films. Ideology in this country is similar with  everyone so we all would assume or believe similar things when watching films. However, these ideologies are changing in Britain and people are moving away from the mainstream way of thinking which could potentially eliminate the phrase altogether because we would all have different views. For example, there are many more homosexuals than there was a decade ago and people are more open about it. The article talks about the ideology glasses which means people see things in similar ways and we can only see what our country what's us to see. Therefore, we make subjective conclusions and we don't consider the other side to the story.

Ideology - binary oppositions

The subject on that week of 'Question Time' was about politics and the BBC decided to include two people who could influence the people's decision. Whether the public would listen to a person who is irrelevant to politicians over a man who is associated with them is debatable as his (Russell Brand) input is as significant as ours. Therefore, the obvious binary opposition is between Russell Brand and Nigel Farage. When Russel Brand supports the majority of the country's ideology he says immigrants aren't the main reason why working class people have less money compared to a decade ago. However Nigel Farage is certain it is the reason and they receive the audience's opinion. I would say it is a dominant ideology that Nigel Farage is a 'bad person' and he is trying to shift the blame of the downfall on the economy on immigrants. In addition Brand tries to relate himself to the audience (working class) by constantly saying 'im just like you' and because of his fame it can be seen as a way of manipulating the audience to form an ideology.

President Barack Obama talks about the ideology created with poor people by the media. In particular news channel 'FOX' has been criticised for negatively portraying these groups of people by the president of America. The ideology has already been constructed without people thinking about its meaning and we would assume whenever a poor citizen does something illegal it is reported and exaggerated immediately on FOX news channel.

President Obama has questioned the channel (binary opposition) and this could diminish the ideology they have created. Also because of the significance of the president citizens of the country may side with him and it could become a dominant ideology. However, I believe there is a lot more to 'do poor people work hard enough?' This could be related with the first debate on immigrants and them being stereotyped in negative ways.

Media magazine

MM50

1. Mainly women have opened their eyes to the fake representation of women when it comes to clothes advertisements. They do not believe these models have been related to the people the business are trying to sell their products to because there aren't many people at the sizes of zero, one or two.
2. A perfect 14
3. The female gaze is different from the male gaze because females are doing the looking at both males and females. They are looking at men because they adore them and they look at females because they admire them.
4. I think the advertisements are not realistic of how women really look but I believe these current models would make the clothing look better on them than size 14 women. It makes women who are above the size 14 or obese women want to lose weight so they can look a little bit of weight.
5. 'A Perfect 14' is about accepting the person you are and being proud of it. Also, people should make the most of what they have and shouldn't have to change their image if they don't want to.

MM51

This section of the article talks about the way people and places are represented through a minority of people who try to get the public to view them in a particular way which is subjective. Everyone has been injected with their views which influences what people believe and the way they think and judge people. Therefore, the media have been successful at manipulating our opinions and we are accustom to their ideology.

Producers will consider: the expectations and needs of target audience, the limitations provided by genre codes, the type of narrative they wish to create and their institutional remit. Certain things specific families have can tell us the type of people they are due to current associations society has on objects and not just people. However, if some things seem natural we would tend to ignore it and no question it because it's within our expectations.

Due to the new media people are able to share their personal opinions to anyone they want. This has created conflict which can start off discreetly but by the end of the week the whole World would be able to hear about it. Through social networking sites, people are able to communicate and expand others subjective opinions because it can be across many countries. For example, in the past we would have to rely on the media in our country to hear a story. However, now we can look online for any news articles from different countries or foreign reports.

Representation theories: blog post

Person of interest

In this scene from Person of interest we see many representations. Most of them are universal ways of thinking/judging. An example is of the American gang that have the hostages waiting in fear for a hero to save them. Richard Dyer's theory would suggest the gangsters, especially because they are black, are violent and have/show no sympathy. The reason why black people are stereotyped in this way is because mainly white middle class males are able to portray them in this way because they have the power to create representations - through news or running the country. Although America have a black President (in power through running country), these representations haven't changed or been watered down. Therefore, this show has used a black gang to keep reinforce the representation of black people by putting the hostages in the vulnerable and unethical position they are in. However, Perkins' theory can also be applied here because of the stories we hear in the news about black people being 'gang affiliated'. So this scene could be partly true because although its not all black people that are heartless criminals there are some that are.

Another representation portrayed in this scene is created when the protagonist (in the suit) uses the information read out from the woman to escape from his capture and vulnerability. The representation shown here is of your typical intelligent and brave protagonist who is able to work under pressure. Medhurst's theory would suggest that this is a positive way of reinforcing the stereotype as we would expect a hero to be able to encrypt or decipher a message like the one given in the scene. Also, it would leave the audience wondering whether they would have been as focused as he was to figure out the message. In addition, there is another representation constructed within the escape when the woman indiscreetly reads out the message not considering it could be a trap. The stereotype here could possibly be of a black person not being as intelligent or educated as the protagonist or white people. Alternatively, the fact that it was one of the crew members instead of the leader of the crew could be another reason why she is represented as careless. This is because the leader of the gang may not have been as foolish to give away information without considering it's consequences. Therefore, I believe this representation can be linked with Medhurst because the audience are being shown a black female stubborn enough to read information out which could have dangered the crew. Also, Mulvey's theory would suggest that women would probably be better of being looked at instead of doing the hard work.

Representation: three clips

Graham Norton

Graham Norton is part of the dominant representation of gay men because he acts in a feminine way. This links to Perkins' theory because the stereotype is partly true. But he has given an alternative representation of men because we would expect a man to act and be masculine. Graham behaves in a feminine way which subverts the stereotype of men being masculine and not feminine. Arnold Schwarzenegger on the other hand is masculine and behaves in a manly way. He reinforces the stereotype of males being physically strong. He is and does everything differently to Graham. Again Perkins' theory can be used with this representation because it's partly true and positive. In addition, I don't think Mulvey's theory can be used because females aren't really gazing at much for it to cover this theory although there is a picture shown of Arnold in his boxers.

London 2012

James Bond is presented very smartly wearing a suit which we would expect from a male who is going to an event. Also, he has collected the female (Queen) which also reinforces the stereotype of men being the 'gentlemen'. This uses Perkins' theory because those representations are true. When the pair jump out the helicopter we see they go by themselves without any help from an expert. We would expect James Bond to be brave and jump out the helicopter which reinforces the stereotype of men being brave. However, we wouldn't expect the Queen to follow him because of her age which subverts the representation of elderly people being wise and not taking risks. In addition, the people of Britain (specifically London) are represented as being happy and proud of our nation because of the amount of Union Jacks spread across the capital. Therefore, it has used Richard Dyer's theory because the media (with power) have represented London in a way they wanted to. They could have showed Britain being a dull and boring nation if they wanted because they have the power to create stereotypes.

Some Girls

The girls are portrayed as being the typical girls we would see because they are shown in one of their bedrooms looking in a mirror which suggests to an audience that they care about their appearance (reinforcement of females). This uses Medhurst's theory because we have made an assumption out of three seconds of a scene which can further our judgements about the four girls as the trailer progresses. However, the girls are shown playing football which subverts the stereotype of females not being sporty and being feminine. This uses Perkins' theory because it is true, we wouldn't expect them to play sport (a masculine sport).

Representation

Person of Interest

This scene includes some typical stereotypes that our society and others (American) would formulate. An example of this is the gang, who look to be in control, are all African American. They are armed and are ruthless and I know this because the gang leader orders his men to eliminate two of the hostages without any rumours. However, in the gang they have a women who seems as heartless as the men which challenges the stereotype of women being physically weak and mentally she seems too composed as she isn't concerned about the gang leader's order. But, she is African American therefore in a way she reinforces the stereotype.

Another example of stereotype in the scene is created with the three hostages. The woman looks scared and doesn't look like she has been in this environment before. Her facial expression suggests she might be on the verge of crying. The bearded man looks as if he has given up once his fate is decided as he shakes his head. However, the dialogue suggests he had something the gang wanted which could make the audience wonder why the elderly man was in this business. This challenges the stereotype of elderly people as being innocent and vulnerable. Finally, the man in the suit looks annoyed and his facial expression implies he has been in a situation similar to this because he doesn't look worried. This reinforces the stereotype that the protagonist is a calm person even when things don't look like they are going his way.

The next stereotype isn't plainly stated by people/media but the way black people are represented we would assume they are believed not be as intelligent as white people. The police (all white males) were able to out smart the gangsters by finding a way of indirectly communicating with the protagonist and they were able to make the arrests.

Dependency theory

Dependency theory

1. I mainly consume media for entertainment purposes. I use devices such as: television, phone, console etc. I can access social media on those devices but I mainly use my phone as it more convenient because it is portable. My gaming is mainly done by using my console because that's what's it's designed for. However, I do use media for information. For example, help for doing my homework can be found on the internet.

2. I believe we rely on the media too much. This isn't good because information we find out can be subject which means we don't know the other side of a story. Therefore, people form opinions based off what the media wants us to know. It's almost as if they are swaying our decisions in a certain path to blind us from the truth. This is dangerous as it creates conflict. There is clear evidence of this and it emphasises the fact that people are reliant on the media.

3. The frequency of people updating their knowledge on certain topics using the media has changed. This is because of the enhancement in technology which is constantly updating and there are many more ways of accessing the internet compared to 10 years ago. Therefore, I think that we were always dependent on the media, it's just that people check sites (news) a lot more frequently compared to the past. However now technology has improved, it allows people in one country to read a newspaper article from another country. This means that opinions formed now are more fair and not as biased as we can now know about the whole news story.

4. This article supports the theory as it states that young people are dependent on the internet and feel lost without it. The theory says we are dependent on the media and it makes us form certain decisions and opinions based on what we are being fed. Also, the article suggests young people need the internet to find out information and for entertainment.

Audience theory

Hypodermic needle model

1. This article links to the model because there is evidence of gamers acting out scenes from games they have played. The game (media) has influenced the students decisions and behaviour which shows that the hypodermic needle has been injected. The dangerous effect made people act in ways they may not have if they didn't play the game. Therefore, there is proof that the theory is still working and is right about media being able to influence our decisions. However, it may not be relevant to all types of games. Also, the students said they would need to be tested on a little longer to see major differences.

2. The games the boy was playing probably influenced him to hack into Talk Talk. This sis because he locked himself in his room and didn't leave it much. Therefore, with all the media around him he could access, he is able to learn new skills (dangerous skills) that he could potentially use against others or businesses. The games he played could have affected his thinking and wanted to act out scenes from the games he constantly plays.

Two step flow model

1. I believe this still relevant in society. This is because many people are gullible to what people say on T.V. For example, the weatherman would tell us to bring an umbrella outside today because we are going to see showers. Although not everyone will use an umbrella, they will probably wear something to counter the rain because the weatherman has influenced their decision. Therefore, I think people form decisions on what other people with more information have supplied them with.

2. He has formed opinions based on what the games have instructed him on. So he would create a character based on what be believes is what the game wanted him to chose. As a result, he fits the two step flow model because his opinions come from an opinion leader and in this case that is the game developer.

3. These celebrities share their experiences on social media with other (not celebrities). The celebrities are the opinion leaders as they tell ordinary people some of their journeys through life. David Cameron sharing his opinions would allow tweeter users to see what the Prime minister has to say in his free time because he doesn't have to tweet anything unless he is questioned by someone near his status. Therefore, many people follow him because they know they will be able to get some information from him (opinion leader).

4. Jamal Edwards chose a different route to others by using YouTube as a way of becoming successful. This means that Jamal probably ignored what he was told about education being the tool to life and will construct paths. He decided to use a camera and record music videos and upload them to YouTube which would get views and reviews with the outcome, money. Also, he left school and didn't stay in education any longer and worked in Topshop whilst doing YouTube on the side. Again, there is more to suggest education wasn't his strong point or he had planned a different route in life.

Blumler and Katz: Uses and Gratification

Image result for calm gamerDiversion - people sometimes have to use entertainment to escape from the struggles in life. A way they do this is by gaming. Certain games are used to release stress and anger which is displayed in a fictional story that can't harm others or themselves in reality. It gives the gamer a new identity that is confidential against everyone else (if desired). This fits the category because it helps people forget about their problems and indulge themselves with a few hours of gaming.

Image result for oo7

Personal relationships - the audience of James Bond will always want him to be successful and eliminate the villain. This is because he is the main character of the film and we have built an emotional connection especially because there have been many other 007 films. This is related to the category because people have developed a relationship with the character and males aspire him and females adore him.

Personal identity - shows allow people to suggest what kind of person they would be if they were in a similar scenario. For example, a reality show like Big Brother lets an audience choose sides when there is conflict in the house. Viewers are able to see if they would be popular or hated in the house due to the eviction process. Therefore, this fits the category because based on who they have sided with, viewers will be able to see how long they would have survived as their personality could be similar to one of the contenders on the show.

Surveillance - the news is an obvious example as people can find out useful information. It gives the audience a chance to make their own conclusions about topics that are discussed on the news. They are able to make conscious decisions without the media manipulating them. However, it depends how much news is taken in as some of the news that is given to us is subjective.

Presentation feedback - Struggler's

Struggler's

C+
WWW:
Key words were used in the presentation (prime time) and examples of the key words were used. Also, there was good references to shows struggler's would watch.

EBI:
We should have used original research of the group instead of taking it from blog. In addition, we could have used bullet points and more images

Self evaluation:
I think that the presentation went well and the class were able to understand what we were teaching them. The information we used was relevant to struggler's. In addition, the characters we used symbolised a struggler's life and we were able to bring it to life because we described and explained their hobbies and employment status. However, the presentation could have included more images because it would have brought the slides to life and the class could relate a picture of beer with the characters. Also, bullet points would allow us to summarise the information we had in the paragraphs which would make the slide look less cluttered and easier to read.

Young and Rubicam

Aspirer

I am an aspirer. I agree with this because I want to be successful and be the person I want to be. The test was accurate because they have given me a result from the psychographic group that I can relate to.  This means that my decisions on how I want to be perceived by others is based on my behaviour and appearance. Therefore, conducting myself in a mature and intelligent manor would suggest to somebody that I am serious and want to achieve/be a succeeder. Also, education is a main factor as of how I will become the person I want to be because I will be able to analyse different outcomes which could lead to different routes in life. Socially, there are many famous people who are successful because of the skills they had acquired from a young age and now are able to use them to make others happy or change the World in some way.

Cool Brands

Nike

I have chosen Nike because I own some of their products from clothing to sport accessories. Also, it is a brand that it very popular amongst many people especially teenagers/ young adults. So it is a trend with this audience so this is why I purchase their products. Personally, I like the clothes and trainers they produce so this is what I look for when I want to buy Nike products. However, they have a category for sport which I am interested in specifically football gear (football boots, shine pads etc). I think it is a social need for people my age because we want to have the latest clothes and show off these luxuries. It is a cool brand because teenagers have promoted this way by making it popular in its segment.

Google

Google is in my top five because it is the search engine I use everyday and the main one I use. It allows me to discover things very quickly and specifically it has helped me in education. Also, I can update myself on breaking news relevant to my searches such as a release date for an album, film, game or updates on sport. Google caters for everyone but I think it focuses on happy families and unity. I think it is a cool brand and will always be one because it unites everyone around the World especially with it's association with YouTube because people can now communicate with each other easier and see who they share interests with.

YouTube

YouTube is a social media network that allows people to post videos then receive reviews on their videos. I enjoy using YouTube because I can see film trailers, listen to music and watch reviews on games I may potentially buy. Similarly to Google, it has a an enormous segment which means anyone can use the site and find something of their interest. Therefore, it covers most of Dyer's lines of appeal. YouTube is a cool brand that it allows anyone to post a video or comments on their site (has to be appropriate).

Netflix

Netflix streams music and films that entertains me so long as I pay the monthly fee. I think it is targeted at a variety of people because it also caters for most people (many genres of film). Happy families and love would be associated with Netflix because people can get together and enjoy a film. I think it is a cool brand because many people use it and is a trend with teenagers and young adults because the genres mainly cater for those ages (action, horror, series etc).

Instagram

Instagram is a social networking site that allows people to share photos and short video clips with others liking and commenting on them. I am a user of Instagram and I have learnt that there are plenty of pictures that cover different genres (art, sport, successful careers, comedy etc). So it covers many different points of Dyer's appeal. It is targeted at teenagers and people slightly older because they have enough free time to browse, share and comment on photos/videos on Instagram. It is a cool brand because it is growing in numbers which would attract even more people to use it and creative people. Therefore, the brand name becomes familiar amongst many people making it popular (like Facebook).

Narrative

Training day

This scene from Training day involves a cop 'rookie' getting beat by Mexicans from a cartel. The medium close ups in the beginning show the facial expression of all the character. The cop looks anxious because his life is probably in danger. The gang however, are intimidating and they show this by talking about violence. The scene starts with a disequilibrium because the cop is in the territory of the gang and he doesn't seem confident about his positioning. Eventually the cop attempts to escape the thugs but he is injured by a bottle being smashed on his head. His injury adds further sympathy for the cop as he is definitely vulnerable to the three gangsters because he could potentially be dazed. Also, the gun adds to the intensity because it suggest to an audience that the Mexicans in the scene are ruthless. The 'new' equilibrium in this scene is crafted when the school girl confirms that the cop was her saviour of the potential rape that could have occurred. The action code is created when the gun is shoved in the cop's face. It suggests he will not survive and blood will be shattered in the bath tub. The hero in this scene is the school girl because she saves the cop who is the princess. The gang, at first, are the villains but then they release in the end and allow him to do his job.

Person of interest

This scene from Person of interest has Reese (man in the suit) eliminate all the gang members with the help of an artificial intelligence. The medium close ups used on all the characters who are tied up, all have different facial expressions. Reese looks as if he is angry and it suggests the situation he is in isn't new to him. The other man looks like he is ashamed with something hence shaking his head. Finally the woman seems to be very scared which could be because she hasn't been in this situation before. In addition, it uses the action code by getting the AI to tell him co-ordinates of the gang before he starts shooting (suggests violence) This scene starts with a disequilibrium because the main character is tied up and looks beaten because of the gang. There doesn't look like there is any way out of this situation. However, the artificial intelligence that helps the man in the suit and co, decided to save him by printing information about one of the gang members set-up (gun, injuries etc.) The 'new' equilibrium is when he gets the gun and begins to shoot the gang. Also, the leader of the gang is captured by the police so it ends on a good note. The hero is Reese because he saves everybody's lives. The donor is the artificial intelligence because it prints out the vital information needed to hurt the gang members. The villain is the gang because they are stopping the man in the suit from saving people.

Key and Peele - Manly tears

In this sketch from key Peele, we see a meeting involving a gang. Close ups are used to show the facial expression of the two main characters and some of the others. One of the men is distort because one of his friends was found dead and the other gang member is immature about the situation and tires to hold his laugh but eventually breaks. It starts with a short equilibrium because the key (gang member laughing) is calm at first and the disequilibrium is when he starts laughing because he disrupts the meeting. The new equilibrium is when Key is shot for laughing and this stops him from stopping the meeting. The villain is Key for creating complication. The hero is the one who kills Key (Peele).

Brand values

Samsung

Samsung is a multinational conglomerate which produces electronics targeted at all ages because of their variety of products. They sell electronics such as:phones, televisions, earphones, speakers, laptops etc. Samsung are flexible in the market they compete in because they are able to invent electronics which give their products an edge against their competitors. Samsung were associated with the west London football club, Chelsea FC. This was absolutely beneficial for Samsung because the Barclay's Premier League is the most watched league in the World. Therefore, the audience would want to be elite like the Chelsea team by having a product it advertises, Samsung - Dyer's line of appeal.

The brand is all about good quality, innovative hi-tech electronics.

It specialises in various flavours like lemon and herb, mild, hot and extra hot. It also has peri-peri marinades. All of these flavours can be bought from retailers which are packaged in a bottle. Nando's would come under happy families and romance on Dyer's line of appeal because it is a restaurant with good quality food which means this is a place to treat someone/people. Their food isn't targeted at anyone specifically because their restaurants are global.

Nando's is a global restaurant which could potentially symbolise love.

Mercedes

Mercedes is a German automobile manufacture which has vehicles roaming roads across the globe such as: cars, buses, coaches, Formula 1 cars and other racing cars. On Dyer's line of appeal it would come under luxury, rich lifestyle. Despite this, a bus/coach wouldn't be considered as luxurious but it's what people instantly think when they hear or see the word Mercedes. In addition to Mercedes association with Formula 1, they supply engines to the current constructors champions, Mercedes AMG which includes the World champion (Lewis Hamilton) and second place (Nico rosberg). This suggests Mercedes dominance and superiority as a brand.

The Mercedes brand is a luxurious, classy and sophisticated brand.
Class

Levis

Levi's is a privately held American clothing company known Worldwide for its Levis' brand of denim jeans. It would be classed luxurious life style because of they specialise in jeans. Therefore, the quality would have to be at it's finest (which it is) and be expensive because of this. This brand has advertisements which infer the brand is for middle or possibly upper class but the people purchasing their products are middle-lower and lower class. So some people buy these clothes to appear as prestige or wealthy but it could be seen as a common brand amongst all people.

Levi's is a brand which values luxury and traditional clothes.

Channel: BBC THREE

BBC THREE:

BBC THREE was launched in February 2003 which is on air from 7 pm - 4 am. BBC has intelligently chosen those times because it shares the terrestrial television bandwidth with CBBC. It's target audience is 16-35 year old age group and creates content relative to a younger audience with shows like Family Guy, Russell Howard's good news, Sun Sex and Suspicious parents attracting that segment. These shows aren't suitable for a younger audience because of the language and scenes from the displayed which are usually sexual, racial, swearing etc. Therefore, it is a low brow channel. Despite BBC THREE specialising in broadcasting this content, they do have shows that can educate it's audience for example 60 seconds (news) and some documentaries still related to youth (Bad Boy boxer and foreign drug houses). Some of BBC THREE's competitors could be ITV2 and E4 because they broadcast low brow shows but E4 does more American shows than the other two. The channel could be portrayed as a catch up channel because it hosts some shows BBC ONE had previously shown. EastEnders comes on BBC THREE a few hours after it is shown on BBC ONE. On average, nine million people watch BBC THREE every week and I think it's real target audience is 13-35 years of age because more people will tune into Family Guy or American dad because they are animations which suggest innocence which is ironic.

The Guardian

Founded by John Edward Taylor in 1821 and he was based in Manchester. It was influenced by Peterloo Massacre and the anti corn laws campaign. Many people were injured and killed in the massacre. At first, the newspaper was only published on Saturdays and then it became a weekly publishing newspaper. The Guardian achieved national and international recognition under the editorship of CP Scott. He passed it onto his sons Edward and John. The Guardian was the first coloured newspaper. The Guardian is an international newspaper and can be accessed via online, app and traditionally reading the newspaper.

BBC

The BBC is funded by the public of the UK. It is a public service broadcaster which means the public pays for the BBC shows to be on their television. The BBC was founded by John Reith in 1922 and is still running in all homes of the United Kingdom. Hence, the World's oldest national broadcasting organisation. BBC has expanded from it's launch in 1922. It used to be a private company in 1923-1926. Most recently, it has added their apps 'BBC iplayer,BBC news, BBC sport' for news and entertainment. 50% of BBC's expenditure is on TV

Disney

It was founded by Walt Disney in 1923 in America. It is the worlds second largest conglomerate in terms of revenue. It was the founder Mickey Mouse and takes ideas from children influences. Their animations are easier to create now compared to the past because there is more/advanced technology now for produces to work with. Also, Disney have allowed their fans to get up close with their character narratives because of Disney land, Disney store and Disney channels.

Twitter

It was founded on March 21 2006 by Jack Dorsey (American). It has around $1.4 billion revenue and has around 302 million active users. It is a social media site that allows people from around the world to interact with each other for free. This is where facts are stated first before anywhere else (most of the time) and opinions are formed. However, there is a limit to the amount of words a user can use in a tweet.

ITV

It was launched on 1955 and )at the time) only had one channel. Similarly to BBC, it expanded it's brand onto the internet (iplayer, news). Unlike BBC, it is a commercial broadcaster which means that there are advertisements on ITV channels so the public doesn't need to fund ITV. It has also added more channels to it's arsenal so viewer numbers should increase which could potentially increase revenue (ITV 1, ITV 2, ITV 3).

Sony

It was founded on May 7th 1946 by Masaru Ibuka and Aiko Morita. It is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation. The name comes from a mix of two words. One was Latin ‘sonus’ which is the root of sonic and sound. The other is ‘sonny’ a familiar term used in 1950’s America to call a boy. It is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan but has situated its Sony buildings across the globe: Surrey (European headquarters), New York City, Philadelphia, Berlin etc. It predominantly focuses on Sony: music, pictures, computer entertainment and mobile. It is a conglomerate to Naughty Dog, CBS record groups, Columbia pictures, Sony Ericsson. Sony Entertainment focuses on creating systems that users can interact with to enjoy themselves. A product produced by Sony that does this is PlayStation and has evolved since its release in 1994. It now is superior console that competes with the Xbox (Microsoft own).

Vivendi

Vivendi was founded in 1853 and is headquartered in Paris, France. It is a French multinational company which has activities like music, television, film, tickets and video hosting service. It owns Canal Group (news, sport), as well as music world leader Universal Music Group. In November 2013, Vivendi became the exclusive owner of the France’s biggest pay TV Company. On the music side, Vivendi produces artists such as Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Maroon 5, Nicki Minaj etc.

Viacom

Viacom is headquartered in New York City, America and the key people of this company are Summer Redstone (Executive chairman) and Philippe Dauman. It is an American global mass media company with interests primarily in cinema and cable television. It is the World’s the sixth largest broadcasting and cable company in terms of revenue. The current Viacom was created on December 31 3005 as a spinoff from CBS Corporation, which changed its name from Viacom to CBS at the same time.

Poster analysis

50 cent: poster analysis

The dominant reading of this poster is a famous person endorsing the Reebok brand. 50 Cent's quote suggests he believes he is the person he is today because of his past. Therefore, Reebok intend for people to buy their clothing so they can be represented or judged a certain way in society because of the person that advertises their brand. The audience (teenagers and young adults) are mostly likely the target for their brand due to the criminal vibe this poster creates. In addition to the criminality, the finger prints on the right implies people who have negative connections with the authority are most likely to buy the product. However, the oppositional reading of this could be that the celebrity endorsing the product is inappropriate with the product and Reebok are trying encourage youngsters to look up to him (role model). Therefore, predominantly parents may protest against their children from purchasing this product because of what the poster symbolises.

LYNX: poster analysis

The  dominant reading of this poster is that the creator wants their audience to see the 'hot girl' who is half naked advertising the lynx shower gel. Despite this, I can infer she doesn't use it but she likes the smell of the product when men use it. Otherwise the creator would want us to see her using it on her hair to suggest that it's for females. Therefore, the male audience would probably consider buying the shower gel because they could potentially get females like the poster suggests. The quote suggests that with the shower gel, you can become more confident when communicating with women because it could be a regular thing if you use LYNX product. However, the oppositional reading could be that females would disagree with this poster. Perhaps it could be seen as sexist because some/most women would wonder how a shower gel will determine whether they want to talk someone. Also, the quote could be interpreted in an appropriate way for parents to dislike the poster.

Reading an image

50 CENT  RBK

This poster visually shows me that a person with a wealthy background is on the front cover of a poster sponsoring Reebok. I am able to identify the person as 50 Cent a famous rapper who had previously gone to prison. It denotes that he is very serious and his eye contact with the audience would make an audience think about their selves. The quote suggests that we shouldn't waste time trying to be someone else so make the most of who you are. It connotes that he doesn't care about what people think of him and the eye to eye contact with the audience makes us believe he is genuine. The monochrome colours emphasise the seriousness and belief of the slogan 'I am what I am'. The colours relate to 'street' colours which aren't vibrant but are the opposite which is different to the areas of higher class people. This is the way some people, youth in particular, want to be portrayed.  Despite this, some people from a higher class would probably buy the Reebok products. The slogan is set in the middle of the screen and has an old fashion looking font to show that people with the Reebok product will feel like they have power. The quote embedded at the top right hand side is purposely on top of the images of finger prints to suggest that he has been in trouble with the authority but it hasn't changed his dreams. The image of 50 Cent hasn't take up most of the poster because it shares half the page with the finger prints which has similar significance. The slogan' font size is bigger than the quote so the audience can try to infer something about the poster with a quick glance. The type of shot is a medium shot so people can see his facial expression and try to relate to him. In addition, his chain could also allow people to relate with him because of the jewellery he has. On this poster their is more than one subject of matter, there are two. 50 Cent is one because he is the endorsing the product and the second is the finger prints because a person's identity cannot be changed. The setting seems to be in a prison because of the dark background which symbolises loneliness and depression. Also, because of the finger prints from potential prisoners. The lighting is low key which connotes he probably has a dark background but it won't hinder his chances of chasing his dreams. Therefore, the audience can relate with him because of something they have done which isn't impressing but are attempting to turn their life around.

Coca Cola

This poster denotes the Christmas season has begun because of Santa sitting with all the gifts. It connotes a cold but jolly time of year. The colour red symbolises love, passion and friendship. There are various shades of red; from the bottom it is it's darkest and the top is the lightest. Santa looks to be sitting on his slay with the toys and his pose is cheerful and jolly. The lines start off bright from the sides then the gradient dies down as it gets closer to Santa Clause. The coke bottle is positioned at the bottom of the central image so the audience are able to see that Coca Cola is an appropriate drink for the Christmas celebrations. The slogan also mixes with the bottle because the word coke is needed in the sentence and they have intelligently utilised it from the manufactured bottle to put into the sentence. The size of 'Coca Cola' at the bottom is there for the audience to realise what product it is especially with its authentic font, The type of shot is a long shot on Santa Clause but we aren't able to see his whole body because of the toys surrounding him. The subject of matter is Santa Clause because he symbolises the Christmas season and joy. The setting could potentially be in the 'North Pole' and the toys connote this because that's 'where his toys are manufactured'. The Lighting is bright which symbolises happiness and love.

Media Consumption

My media consumption

Newspaper

I haven't read a newspaper in a while. However I do read the news on the internet on BBC news/sport, Sky sports. When I do read the newspaper I would normally go to the back to see the sports news. Sometimes I will read a story that has caught my attention. The sections about the Government I don't read because it doesn't interest me. I would read the stories that are significant or any sports stories (football in particular). Someone else would buy the newspaper and I would surf through the stories until there is something that I want to read. Yes, I mostly read the online newspapers to see the latest news and updates. Again, it is the sport news that I am mostly interested in.

Magazines

I don't buy magazines or read any of them.

Television

I watch 5 hours of TV and the times I watch shows can be from 12 to 3 or 3 to 5 or 21 to midnight. I am currently watching Person of Interest and I enjoy it because it's thrilling and unpredictable. Also, I watch football matches live or Match of the day hence the times I watch TV. I watch these shows by myself because I can watch movies or series online. But I watch the football with my father. I use the laptop to watch movies and series and sometimes stream matches.

Radio

Only when I am in a car do I listen to the radio. But not all the time do I listen to it because I would be in a conversation with the people in the car. The radio stations that would normally be on when I am in a car (depending on who is in it) are Capital FM, Kiss 100. I probably listen to an hours worth of radio in a week and there isn't really a specific time of day I listen to the radio. This is because I mainly use the radio when I am in the car so it could be any time.

Cinema

I have seen Straight outta Compton and Fantastic 4. The N.W.A film was inspirational and it showed the struggle black people in the city of Compton had to go through. Fantastic 4 on the other hand was terrible and didn't relate to the original films. I saw the Friday sequels, the equaliser, the hangover sequels online. Some of the films I felt like revisiting because I enjoyed them the first time I watched it. Straight outta Compton and Fantastic 4 I watched with my friends. I suggested we watched Straight outta Compton but fantastic 4 was our plan b film if South paw was on screens. I would use my laptop to watch films.

Online

I use the internet everyday for social media or streaming or gaming or homework. It is accessed at home and in school. As of recent I have been using the blogger website, media macguffin, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, Sky Sports, BBC sport/news, Putlocker and gaming. I use some of these websites for educational reasons (blogger, macguffin), information (Sky sports, BBC sport/news) and entertainment (Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, Putlocker, gaming). I use my phone to access social media websites, the laptop to stream, watch videos and do homework. The PlayStation 4 is used for gaming, Spotify and YouTube. I use Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Facebook. i use them to see what is relevant, entertainment and communication.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I think I need to concentrate on buying and reading more newspapers and start reading magazines to enhance my abilities on analysing  in media.

Introducion

Media A level

Why media

I am Sharife Anderson and I have chosen this subject because it is an interest of mine. In year 10 the subject at GCSE really attracted my attention and I would voluntarily stay behind after school to enhance my coursework. I acquired a B in the subject in the GCSE.

Content I create

From taking the subject in year 10, it showed me editing was a skill that I could do and also how creative I could be. So I decided to edit a gaming video and upload it to YouTube. In addition, I created a logo to go with the channel and but there haven't been any additions to the channel. However, I help my brother with his YouTube channel with editing and suggestions with videos.

Media- film, shows

The recent films I have watched are Straight outta Compton, Fantastic 4. The N.W.A film was an absolute masterpiece because it showed the struggle black people had in those days and how this group were able to use this negativity to become something. The more abuse they received, the more lyrics they re able to make. It was inspirational. Fantastic 4 on the other hand was an utter disappointment because it didn't really relate to the other sequels. I finished watching 'Person of Interest' which is about a group of people saving the people of Ney York by utilising a system that can hack into any devices and listen to any plans of terrorism.
