Channel: BBC THREE

BBC THREE:

BBC THREE was launched in February 2003 which is on air from 7 pm - 4 am. BBC has intelligently chosen those times because it shares the terrestrial television bandwidth with CBBC. It's target audience is 16-35 year old age group and creates content relative to a younger audience with shows like Family Guy, Russell Howard's good news, Sun Sex and Suspicious parents attracting that segment. These shows aren't suitable for a younger audience because of the language and scenes from the displayed which are usually sexual, racial, swearing etc. Therefore, it is a low brow channel. Despite BBC THREE specialising in broadcasting this content, they do have shows that can educate it's audience for example 60 seconds (news) and some documentaries still related to youth (Bad Boy boxer and foreign drug houses). Some of BBC THREE's competitors could be ITV2 and E4 because they broadcast low brow shows but E4 does more American shows than the other two. The channel could be portrayed as a catch up channel because it hosts some shows BBC ONE had previously shown. EastEnders comes on BBC THREE a few hours after it is shown on BBC ONE. On average, nine million people watch BBC THREE every week and I think it's real target audience is 13-35 years of age because more people will tune into Family Guy or American dad because they are animations which suggest innocence which is ironic.
