Poster analysis

50 cent: poster analysis

The dominant reading of this poster is a famous person endorsing the Reebok brand. 50 Cent's quote suggests he believes he is the person he is today because of his past. Therefore, Reebok intend for people to buy their clothing so they can be represented or judged a certain way in society because of the person that advertises their brand. The audience (teenagers and young adults) are mostly likely the target for their brand due to the criminal vibe this poster creates. In addition to the criminality, the finger prints on the right implies people who have negative connections with the authority are most likely to buy the product. However, the oppositional reading of this could be that the celebrity endorsing the product is inappropriate with the product and Reebok are trying encourage youngsters to look up to him (role model). Therefore, predominantly parents may protest against their children from purchasing this product because of what the poster symbolises.

LYNX: poster analysis

The  dominant reading of this poster is that the creator wants their audience to see the 'hot girl' who is half naked advertising the lynx shower gel. Despite this, I can infer she doesn't use it but she likes the smell of the product when men use it. Otherwise the creator would want us to see her using it on her hair to suggest that it's for females. Therefore, the male audience would probably consider buying the shower gel because they could potentially get females like the poster suggests. The quote suggests that with the shower gel, you can become more confident when communicating with women because it could be a regular thing if you use LYNX product. However, the oppositional reading could be that females would disagree with this poster. Perhaps it could be seen as sexist because some/most women would wonder how a shower gel will determine whether they want to talk someone. Also, the quote could be interpreted in an appropriate way for parents to dislike the poster.

Reading an image

50 CENT  RBK

This poster visually shows me that a person with a wealthy background is on the front cover of a poster sponsoring Reebok. I am able to identify the person as 50 Cent a famous rapper who had previously gone to prison. It denotes that he is very serious and his eye contact with the audience would make an audience think about their selves. The quote suggests that we shouldn't waste time trying to be someone else so make the most of who you are. It connotes that he doesn't care about what people think of him and the eye to eye contact with the audience makes us believe he is genuine. The monochrome colours emphasise the seriousness and belief of the slogan 'I am what I am'. The colours relate to 'street' colours which aren't vibrant but are the opposite which is different to the areas of higher class people. This is the way some people, youth in particular, want to be portrayed.  Despite this, some people from a higher class would probably buy the Reebok products. The slogan is set in the middle of the screen and has an old fashion looking font to show that people with the Reebok product will feel like they have power. The quote embedded at the top right hand side is purposely on top of the images of finger prints to suggest that he has been in trouble with the authority but it hasn't changed his dreams. The image of 50 Cent hasn't take up most of the poster because it shares half the page with the finger prints which has similar significance. The slogan' font size is bigger than the quote so the audience can try to infer something about the poster with a quick glance. The type of shot is a medium shot so people can see his facial expression and try to relate to him. In addition, his chain could also allow people to relate with him because of the jewellery he has. On this poster their is more than one subject of matter, there are two. 50 Cent is one because he is the endorsing the product and the second is the finger prints because a person's identity cannot be changed. The setting seems to be in a prison because of the dark background which symbolises loneliness and depression. Also, because of the finger prints from potential prisoners. The lighting is low key which connotes he probably has a dark background but it won't hinder his chances of chasing his dreams. Therefore, the audience can relate with him because of something they have done which isn't impressing but are attempting to turn their life around.

Coca Cola

This poster denotes the Christmas season has begun because of Santa sitting with all the gifts. It connotes a cold but jolly time of year. The colour red symbolises love, passion and friendship. There are various shades of red; from the bottom it is it's darkest and the top is the lightest. Santa looks to be sitting on his slay with the toys and his pose is cheerful and jolly. The lines start off bright from the sides then the gradient dies down as it gets closer to Santa Clause. The coke bottle is positioned at the bottom of the central image so the audience are able to see that Coca Cola is an appropriate drink for the Christmas celebrations. The slogan also mixes with the bottle because the word coke is needed in the sentence and they have intelligently utilised it from the manufactured bottle to put into the sentence. The size of 'Coca Cola' at the bottom is there for the audience to realise what product it is especially with its authentic font, The type of shot is a long shot on Santa Clause but we aren't able to see his whole body because of the toys surrounding him. The subject of matter is Santa Clause because he symbolises the Christmas season and joy. The setting could potentially be in the 'North Pole' and the toys connote this because that's 'where his toys are manufactured'. The Lighting is bright which symbolises happiness and love.

Media Consumption

My media consumption

Newspaper

I haven't read a newspaper in a while. However I do read the news on the internet on BBC news/sport, Sky sports. When I do read the newspaper I would normally go to the back to see the sports news. Sometimes I will read a story that has caught my attention. The sections about the Government I don't read because it doesn't interest me. I would read the stories that are significant or any sports stories (football in particular). Someone else would buy the newspaper and I would surf through the stories until there is something that I want to read. Yes, I mostly read the online newspapers to see the latest news and updates. Again, it is the sport news that I am mostly interested in.

Magazines

I don't buy magazines or read any of them.

Television

I watch 5 hours of TV and the times I watch shows can be from 12 to 3 or 3 to 5 or 21 to midnight. I am currently watching Person of Interest and I enjoy it because it's thrilling and unpredictable. Also, I watch football matches live or Match of the day hence the times I watch TV. I watch these shows by myself because I can watch movies or series online. But I watch the football with my father. I use the laptop to watch movies and series and sometimes stream matches.

Radio

Only when I am in a car do I listen to the radio. But not all the time do I listen to it because I would be in a conversation with the people in the car. The radio stations that would normally be on when I am in a car (depending on who is in it) are Capital FM, Kiss 100. I probably listen to an hours worth of radio in a week and there isn't really a specific time of day I listen to the radio. This is because I mainly use the radio when I am in the car so it could be any time.

Cinema

I have seen Straight outta Compton and Fantastic 4. The N.W.A film was inspirational and it showed the struggle black people in the city of Compton had to go through. Fantastic 4 on the other hand was terrible and didn't relate to the original films. I saw the Friday sequels, the equaliser, the hangover sequels online. Some of the films I felt like revisiting because I enjoyed them the first time I watched it. Straight outta Compton and Fantastic 4 I watched with my friends. I suggested we watched Straight outta Compton but fantastic 4 was our plan b film if South paw was on screens. I would use my laptop to watch films.

Online

I use the internet everyday for social media or streaming or gaming or homework. It is accessed at home and in school. As of recent I have been using the blogger website, media macguffin, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, Sky Sports, BBC sport/news, Putlocker and gaming. I use some of these websites for educational reasons (blogger, macguffin), information (Sky sports, BBC sport/news) and entertainment (Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, Putlocker, gaming). I use my phone to access social media websites, the laptop to stream, watch videos and do homework. The PlayStation 4 is used for gaming, Spotify and YouTube. I use Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Facebook. i use them to see what is relevant, entertainment and communication.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I think I need to concentrate on buying and reading more newspapers and start reading magazines to enhance my abilities on analysing  in media.

Introducion

Media A level

Why media

I am Sharife Anderson and I have chosen this subject because it is an interest of mine. In year 10 the subject at GCSE really attracted my attention and I would voluntarily stay behind after school to enhance my coursework. I acquired a B in the subject in the GCSE.

Content I create

From taking the subject in year 10, it showed me editing was a skill that I could do and also how creative I could be. So I decided to edit a gaming video and upload it to YouTube. In addition, I created a logo to go with the channel and but there haven't been any additions to the channel. However, I help my brother with his YouTube channel with editing and suggestions with videos.

Media- film, shows

The recent films I have watched are Straight outta Compton, Fantastic 4. The N.W.A film was an absolute masterpiece because it showed the struggle black people had in those days and how this group were able to use this negativity to become something. The more abuse they received, the more lyrics they re able to make. It was inspirational. Fantastic 4 on the other hand was an utter disappointment because it didn't really relate to the other sequels. I finished watching 'Person of Interest' which is about a group of people saving the people of Ney York by utilising a system that can hack into any devices and listen to any plans of terrorism.
