Cool Brands

Nike

I have chosen Nike because I own some of their products from clothing to sport accessories. Also, it is a brand that it very popular amongst many people especially teenagers/ young adults. So it is a trend with this audience so this is why I purchase their products. Personally, I like the clothes and trainers they produce so this is what I look for when I want to buy Nike products. However, they have a category for sport which I am interested in specifically football gear (football boots, shine pads etc). I think it is a social need for people my age because we want to have the latest clothes and show off these luxuries. It is a cool brand because teenagers have promoted this way by making it popular in its segment.

Google

Google is in my top five because it is the search engine I use everyday and the main one I use. It allows me to discover things very quickly and specifically it has helped me in education. Also, I can update myself on breaking news relevant to my searches such as a release date for an album, film, game or updates on sport. Google caters for everyone but I think it focuses on happy families and unity. I think it is a cool brand and will always be one because it unites everyone around the World especially with it's association with YouTube because people can now communicate with each other easier and see who they share interests with.

YouTube

YouTube is a social media network that allows people to post videos then receive reviews on their videos. I enjoy using YouTube because I can see film trailers, listen to music and watch reviews on games I may potentially buy. Similarly to Google, it has a an enormous segment which means anyone can use the site and find something of their interest. Therefore, it covers most of Dyer's lines of appeal. YouTube is a cool brand that it allows anyone to post a video or comments on their site (has to be appropriate).

Netflix

Netflix streams music and films that entertains me so long as I pay the monthly fee. I think it is targeted at a variety of people because it also caters for most people (many genres of film). Happy families and love would be associated with Netflix because people can get together and enjoy a film. I think it is a cool brand because many people use it and is a trend with teenagers and young adults because the genres mainly cater for those ages (action, horror, series etc).

Instagram

Instagram is a social networking site that allows people to share photos and short video clips with others liking and commenting on them. I am a user of Instagram and I have learnt that there are plenty of pictures that cover different genres (art, sport, successful careers, comedy etc). So it covers many different points of Dyer's appeal. It is targeted at teenagers and people slightly older because they have enough free time to browse, share and comment on photos/videos on Instagram. It is a cool brand because it is growing in numbers which would attract even more people to use it and creative people. Therefore, the brand name becomes familiar amongst many people making it popular (like Facebook).

Narrative

Training day

This scene from Training day involves a cop 'rookie' getting beat by Mexicans from a cartel. The medium close ups in the beginning show the facial expression of all the character. The cop looks anxious because his life is probably in danger. The gang however, are intimidating and they show this by talking about violence. The scene starts with a disequilibrium because the cop is in the territory of the gang and he doesn't seem confident about his positioning. Eventually the cop attempts to escape the thugs but he is injured by a bottle being smashed on his head. His injury adds further sympathy for the cop as he is definitely vulnerable to the three gangsters because he could potentially be dazed. Also, the gun adds to the intensity because it suggest to an audience that the Mexicans in the scene are ruthless. The 'new' equilibrium in this scene is crafted when the school girl confirms that the cop was her saviour of the potential rape that could have occurred. The action code is created when the gun is shoved in the cop's face. It suggests he will not survive and blood will be shattered in the bath tub. The hero in this scene is the school girl because she saves the cop who is the princess. The gang, at first, are the villains but then they release in the end and allow him to do his job.

Person of interest

This scene from Person of interest has Reese (man in the suit) eliminate all the gang members with the help of an artificial intelligence. The medium close ups used on all the characters who are tied up, all have different facial expressions. Reese looks as if he is angry and it suggests the situation he is in isn't new to him. The other man looks like he is ashamed with something hence shaking his head. Finally the woman seems to be very scared which could be because she hasn't been in this situation before. In addition, it uses the action code by getting the AI to tell him co-ordinates of the gang before he starts shooting (suggests violence) This scene starts with a disequilibrium because the main character is tied up and looks beaten because of the gang. There doesn't look like there is any way out of this situation. However, the artificial intelligence that helps the man in the suit and co, decided to save him by printing information about one of the gang members set-up (gun, injuries etc.) The 'new' equilibrium is when he gets the gun and begins to shoot the gang. Also, the leader of the gang is captured by the police so it ends on a good note. The hero is Reese because he saves everybody's lives. The donor is the artificial intelligence because it prints out the vital information needed to hurt the gang members. The villain is the gang because they are stopping the man in the suit from saving people.

Key and Peele - Manly tears

In this sketch from key Peele, we see a meeting involving a gang. Close ups are used to show the facial expression of the two main characters and some of the others. One of the men is distort because one of his friends was found dead and the other gang member is immature about the situation and tires to hold his laugh but eventually breaks. It starts with a short equilibrium because the key (gang member laughing) is calm at first and the disequilibrium is when he starts laughing because he disrupts the meeting. The new equilibrium is when Key is shot for laughing and this stops him from stopping the meeting. The villain is Key for creating complication. The hero is the one who kills Key (Peele).

Brand values

Samsung

Samsung is a multinational conglomerate which produces electronics targeted at all ages because of their variety of products. They sell electronics such as:phones, televisions, earphones, speakers, laptops etc. Samsung are flexible in the market they compete in because they are able to invent electronics which give their products an edge against their competitors. Samsung were associated with the west London football club, Chelsea FC. This was absolutely beneficial for Samsung because the Barclay's Premier League is the most watched league in the World. Therefore, the audience would want to be elite like the Chelsea team by having a product it advertises, Samsung - Dyer's line of appeal.

The brand is all about good quality, innovative hi-tech electronics.
Hi-tech

Nando's

Nando's is an international casual dining restaurant chain originating from South Africa, with a Mozambican and Portuguese theme. It specialises in various flavours like lemon and herb, mild, hot and extra hot. It also has peri-peri marinades. All of these flavours can be bought from retailers which are packaged in a bottle. Nando's would come under happy families and romance on Dyer's line of appeal because it is a restaurant with good quality food which means this is a place to treat someone/people. Their food isn't targeted at anyone specifically because their restaurants are global.

Nando's is a global restaurant which could potentially symbolise love.
Families

Mercedes

Mercedes is a German automobile manufacture which has vehicles roaming roads across the globe such as: cars, buses, coaches, Formula 1 cars and other racing cars. On Dyer's line of appeal it would come under luxury, rich lifestyle. Despite this, a bus/coach wouldn't be considered as luxurious but it's what people instantly think when they hear or see the word Mercedes. In addition to Mercedes association with Formula 1, they supply engines to the current constructors champions, Mercedes AMG which includes the World champion (Lewis Hamilton) and second place (Nico rosberg). This suggests Mercedes dominance and superiority as a brand.

The Mercedes brand is a luxurious, classy and sophisticated brand.
Class

Levis

Levi's is a privately held American clothing company known Worldwide for its Levis' brand of denim jeans. It would be classed luxurious life style because of they specialise in jeans. Therefore, the quality would have to be at it's finest (which it is) and be expensive because of this. This brand has advertisements which infer the brand is for middle or possibly upper class but the people purchasing their products are middle-lower and lower class. So some people buy these clothes to appear as prestige or wealthy but it could be seen as a common brand amongst all people.

Levi's is a brand which values luxury and traditional clothes.
Traditional

Instagram

Instagram is an online mobile photo sharing, video sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos and share them to a variety of social networking platforms such as: Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. It has recently overtaken Twitter with the amount of users there are by many millions. It is definitely growing in users and its updates just show how much their producers are dedicated to the application. It's brand is advertised around many places and has utilised sport, similar to Samsung, to spread it's brand name. It would come under social needs on dyer's lines of appeal.

Instagram is a global brand that allows people to communicate.

Channel: BBC THREE

BBC THREE:

BBC THREE was launched in February 2003 which is on air from 7 pm - 4 am. BBC has intelligently chosen those times because it shares the terrestrial television bandwidth with CBBC. It's target audience is 16-35 year old age group and creates content relative to a younger audience with shows like Family Guy, Russell Howard's good news, Sun Sex and Suspicious parents attracting that segment. These shows aren't suitable for a younger audience because of the language and scenes from the displayed which are usually sexual, racial, swearing etc. Therefore, it is a low brow channel. Despite BBC THREE specialising in broadcasting this content, they do have shows that can educate it's audience for example 60 seconds (news) and some documentaries still related to youth (Bad Boy boxer and foreign drug houses). Some of BBC THREE's competitors could be ITV2 and E4 because they broadcast low brow shows but E4 does more American shows than the other two. The channel could be portrayed as a catch up channel because it hosts some shows BBC ONE had previously shown. EastEnders comes on BBC THREE a few hours after it is shown on BBC ONE. On average, nine million people watch BBC THREE every week and I think it's real target audience is 13-35 years of age because more people will tune into Family Guy or American dad because they are animations which suggest innocence which is ironic.

ITV

It was launched on 1955 and )at the time) only had one channel. Similarly to BBC, it expanded it's brand onto the internet (iplayer, news). Unlike BBC, it is a commercial broadcaster which means that there are advertisements on ITV channels so the public doesn't need to fund ITV. It has also added more channels to it's arsenal so viewer numbers should increase which could potentially increase revenue (ITV 1, ITV 2, ITV 3).

Sony

It was founded on May 7th 1946 by Masaru Ibuka and Aiko Morita. It is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation. The name comes from a mix of two words.
