Ill Manors: social media

Facebook

It has 29,879 likes. The top of the page promotes the 'IllManors' film on dvd. The film poster is the main/central image. There are links to videos related to the film or Plan B. An example is when he went on The Johnathan Ross show. He was able to discuss his opinions on the dominant ideology in society about youngsters living estates and the riots. In addition, the film was being promoted and an alternative audience to the film's target audience would be informed about the film Ill Manors which they probably haven't heard of. Furthermore, other celebrities have given their feedback and their fan base may trust the celebrity enough to watch the film for them selves. The comments section allows Facebook users to add comments and reviews on the film. They can tag/share it with friends who can learn about the film through reading the reviews from other people and possibly their favorite celebrities. The music video would have links to other social media platforms. They usually would be linked to YouTube and the trailer would be found their also.

Twitter

Their profile image is a picture of the Ill manors logo. An audience would assume that without seeing a character or setting, that it is well known by many and would be able to describe what the logo suggests. There aren't any hashtags. Mainly reviews on the film and people interacting with each other. Can't find any. However, there are pictures from stores selling the film on DVD. There are pictures of the DVD cover of Ill Manors. One of the pictures is in the store HMV which would simply tell an audience that the film is being sold in that store and other similar ones to HMV. Also, there are pictures of fans meeting Ben Drew. The film is being advertised through Tag London campaign because of the projection of the tweets people created. There are posts of the projections with people giving their feedback on what was said on Twitter. They target the right audience because the ideologies being displayed would be associated with the strugglers of these estates. Therefore, the audience could potentially watch the film as it speaks to them.

Instagram

Instagram only allows for pictures to be uploaded which is a good method for Ill Manors to promote their film. This is important as followers of the page can share with their friends and learn about the progress and opportunities available for them. The hashtags are similar to Twitter ones to keep the consistency so the audience associate it with the film.

YouTube

The channel has promoted Plan B and his music. This is done by uploading his music and film trailer. The channel promotes the film and music video which is a cross promotion. There are links to other social networks in the banner which would allow the user to click on to visit the Ill Manors page.

Ill manors: website analysis

1. The Ill Manors logo is being utilised as a brand rather than a film name. I believe this because the picture above from the Ill Manors' website has the logo in big and bold for the viewer to recognise first despite its positioning. The name is being used as a hashtag which is a clever idea because it is free advertisement. Plus, its target audience uses social media and would be updated with the latest facts about the brand if their account shows any history of liking any of the Ill Manors content. In addition, we see the dark and dangerous estate of London in the background with thugs blocking any trespassers. Also, at the bottom of the image it includes a blade which has consistently been used in several other Ill Manors' advertisements. It must connote death and chaos as it is a weapon which can do significant damage. With the cold hearts of these criminals, viewers are left to believe they will show no mercy when handling the weapon as portrayed in the film.

2. The image not only advertises it's film but also attempts to speak to its target audience through the images used in the picture. Some of the the things like graffiti would allow viewers to associate their lives with those in the picture because they may use the cans to spray paint walls and damage society. Therefore, because of this the audience may feel like they now are in a group in society and have a voice and a true leader.

3. There are links to their social networking account at the top of the website which allows users to get closer to Ill Manors and Plan B. They can take an interest in debates and campaigns which can take them off the streets and possibly reduce crimes. Also, for Plan B it is another method of advertising his productions. The website expresses music with links to concerts, music channels and performances.

4. We see Ben Drew's ideologies being portrayed as he doesn't agree with the riots but also disagrees with the public's views about the people involved. Similarly to his Ted ex speech, he spoke about this unique and dangerous segment of our society and dissected the modern meaning of the word 'chav'. Its an example of a stereotype that the public have associated with crime and Ben Drew attempts to convince the public that they shouldn't generalise the people with the riots.

5. To have a social media channel is easier to start up and doesn't cost the business much money. They probably would have to pay other institutions to promote their film through social media. However, they would be able to generate a hashtag which could attract an audience that would enjoy a film: #made by Plan B #corrupt London #drug dealers. Those are examples of hashtags that may attract an audience and as people can share with their friends, viral marketing is much quicker.

Ill manors: e-media

1. The campaign was a fantastic opportunity for people who don't usually have a voice to be heard. We see people's opinions about the way the country is run and who is really benefiting from the changes David Cameron has made through the hashtag '#ILLMANORS'. This is clever method of uniting people who aren't fans or don't agree with the majority of responders to challenge and attempt to reason with these uneducated and working class citizens. Also, its a promotion strategy as the music video or film trailer can be linked within the bio of the account holding the discussion.

2. The opinions people create could include evidence from the film to support their points. Although the characters are not real, people do live similar lives to them. This could lead to an audience who would challenge these strugglers (middle class) to watch the film to gain a better understanding. In addition, the film trailer could be posted every hour to attract people into watching the film if they haven't seen it because the campaign was constructed by the producers of the film.

3. Synergy is used between the song production and the film production. The film uses the soundtracks from Plan B's album to tell a story in his film which could gain the audience's attention because they then would be able to associate the music with the film. Both content use the same name and font which is deliberately done to create a brand for the film and album. Furthermore, Tag London used synergy when advertising Plan B's album with twitter. There was a hashtag (#illmanorsalbum) that was used in order for people to have knowledge on the music content as many people already knew about his film. Cross promotions are utilised in the film reviews that would have a link to Plan B's music video. Viewers would be try to be convinced into buying the album if the reviews are positive.

4. User generated campaigns would make the people involved feel that they are being listened to and that ordinary people like themselves have created the campaign. Also, we are more likely to hear from people who don't have a say in society and see their perspective of politics. It allows everyone to have a chance in society to share their opinions with the World.

5. #Illmanors just another example of Cameron's broken Britain.
This quote suggests people who are working class and below would feel this way about him as he doesn't help their needs compared to the higher classes. This would be linked with the music video as the lyrics from Plan B's song implies he doesn't agree with the Prime Minister's ruling.
#Illmanors Inclusion not Exclusion
This tweet suggests the brand has allowed the outcasters of society to (people living in estates) be part of society. The words used are significant because they are two completely opposite words which symbolise a change needs to be made. Therefore, with the brands help people have become more open about the certain group in our society being ignored. The tweet would appeal to working class and unemployed because perhaps it's not the case of council estate citizens being ignored but middle class and upper are only being listened to, considering they have the authority to make change.
Plan B's #Illmanors is sick, get involved
This tweet would appeal to a younger and uneducated audience as the language used is informal. Also, considering the target audience for the debate is for council estate kids we would expect to see slang and street talk. Strugglers would appeal to this as they may be able to relate to the language used.
#Illmanors, society rebelling back at broken Britain
From this tweet, we can assume the lower classes aren't at all impressed with David Cameron's methods as Britain is represented negatively. The audience that would agree with this would be working class as they watch the news and are more observant of the countries affairs than unemployed people.
Sounds like the truth #Illmanors
Ill manors is referred to as a brand instead of a film or album. This means it has had an impact on the audience's thinking. Whether Ben Drew has made an impact on people because of his music/ film making or because people can associate their childhood with what he says doesn't matter as long as there are voices being projected loud enough people will listen. Therefore, I believe a wide range of people would agree with the tweet.

BFI notes

The last British film I watched was Ill Manors. The main things people associate with British are having British actors and a British setting. International audiences would be interested in British films because of the culture and Harry Potter is an example. The way of living is different to the way people live in America although some of Harry Potter is fictional. This is about the production of low budget films which are usually British.

A British audience

A British audience would appeal to a culture proud film. These kind of films or shows would be The King's Speech, Downton Abbey where it shows British history and it's old culture. The target audience within this segment is an older generation as there are able to relate to some of the stories being portrayed in these films or are proud of the Royal's of the country.

An international audience

They would want to see the way British culture is/used to be as its an alternative way of living but more specifically to British culture, its uniqueness. The history of Britain amazes Americans (for example) which means they may be prone to watch films situated around a storyline of British history. However, Americans are known for having high enthusiasm and a British film like James Bond would be able to fill their appetite for action and chaos.

Types of cinemas

Art house cinemas which are small independent cinemas which screen low budget films.
Multiplex would show the more blockbuster films which mainstreamers would enjoy.

Uses and gratification

The theory discovers what people do with media rather than what it does to people. People use the media to seek answers they want and with their findings can become subjective with results found.

A royal night out

This film was about the royal family living the life of ordinary people.
British audience wouldn't expect this from culture.
International audience would think of the class portrayed. Also romance.

The selfish Giant

This film focuses on the underclass and the unfortunate.

A British film would see the youth of Britain.
International audience would learn something new about the culture.

The woman in black

This film is about British horror.
A British audience would think of upper class because of posh accents
International audience would enjoy the film because of the class separation system. British horror which is an alternative to the American in your face horror films.

Print platform: branding

DVD

1. The title is in front of the character which would attract the audience. This is useful as the audience would be able to spot the title first. Therefore, the brand can become a brand for the film which can be used to promote the films in other ways. Also, the gun connotes something dangerous and thrilling about the film. I believe the use of the gun and council estates also connotes Plan B's ideologies will probably be displayed in the film. We can use Perkin's theory to suggest stereotypes about youth from estates are dangerous. Also, the use of the star ratings would be able to attract an audience as there are quotes below from film reviewers assuring people the film is worth watching.
2. The font is the same throughout all promotions of the film including the cross promotion between the music video and film. It uses a distinctive font which appears similar to blocks from an estate. This is important as it would be able to construct a link between the film and album with the title. The text at the top of the print image cross promotes another film Plan B is in which people may have seen and enjoyed because of Plan B's acting (may be a fan through 'Sweeny').
3. As mentioned before, synergy is used at the top of the DVD cover which mentions Plan B acting in the Sweeny. This means that audiences who watched Sweeny and liked Plan B's acting may want to watch his new film because they are a fan. Furthermore, the use of the same font/name 'Ill Manors' is that it creates synergy between the music video and the film. Therefore, a brand can be formed quicker as people will acknowledge the producer of both productions.

Billboard

Image result for ill manors print

1. The use of the font being enlarged, having the same font and colour as other print promotion is that the audience will be able to associate it to the producer and music video. This means that the title becomes a brand for the film. In addition, the blade is used to connote something deadly about the narrative of the film. As it's a large image, it would catch the audiences attention and they could be able to put the costume Plan B is wearing and his attitude with the dangerous weapon.
2. The background of where this billboard is positioned doesn't look pleasant which could be deliberate to suggest the narrative is going to be similar to the setting of the billboard.Furthermore, the background of the print image includes council estates which an audience interested in the film will realise is significantly emphasised in several other print media.
3. The font of the title is similar to the font of his album which also has the same name 'Ill Manors'.

Poster

1. The title again is the same as other print adverts. This is done deliberately to create a brand. The audience would associate the brand with the film/music. The colour of the image is dull and implies a negative and deadly narrative of the film. The use of the house with graffiti suggests youth destruction to the environment and there carelessness to society. It reinforces the stereotype of young people being heavily linked with crime.
2. Again, the title would allow the viewer to identity the producer of the content because they probably would have seen it before from other print adverts or Plan B's album.
3. The synergy is used between the film and music video promotion. Also, the use of social media links (hashtag) would allow the audience to get closer to the film and see their associates.

Print platform

Men's health magazine

For this this magazine I believe its target audience is aimed at males because they may want advise on how to lose weight from one of their favoruite artists. Also, from the psychographics, mainstreamers may be interested in this as they already want to fit in with society and trends so would want to lose excess fat like Ben Drew did. Potentially, strugglers would view this magazine as a source of inspiration to find something to do or something similar to their idol. Ben Drew's lifestyle is displayed in this magazine so his target audience can now get closer to his life and get a better understanding of the person behind the protests.

The article does more than entertain because it provides the viewer with information about Ben Drew's lifestyle. His audience may have not known about some of things he had to do to become as successful as he is. Therefore, with the determination he had to lose weight, viewers can feed off of the determination and eagerness to become successful.

The intro sentence would attract the viewer as they would be surprised about Ben Drew's weight loss. They would use this to attract his fan base which would then (if it works) attract the audience of people who want to lose weight.

The way the interview is structured would entice the reader because the question is a sub heading in bold and the answers and short which means the audience of Men's health would want to know how Ben Drew dealt with weight loss. Also, because the article releases Plan B from his political views and allows the audience to learn more about the man behind the his arguments.

We see cross promotion when Ben Drew talk about his political beliefs and how its portrayed in his film Ill manors.

NME magazine

The target audience for NME would be in the age range 16-30 because it attracts a rock audience (punks) and they usually are young people. Despite this, I believe the fans of Plan B, his beliefs and fans of hip hop would want to read this magazine to read what he said. From the demographics I think this would appeal to working class citizens as it may be able to relate to his beliefs and they would have the education and desire to read the magazine.

The article informs the reader on youth culture and his opinions about the government. He also subverts the dominant ideology about the council estate youth culture being worthless to society.

The interview only displays Plan B's perspective and we don't see any responses from David Cameron about Ill manors. This would appeal to the audience of Plan B because they probably would only want to listen/read his opinions in the interview.

The reader would want to keep reading this because he cross promotes his film and reveals some of the narrative which would appeal to his fan base that might want to watch his film.

The guardian

The article would appeal to upper/middle classes as the article slates Ill Manor significantly. They continuously disrespect the film and Ben Drew comparing it to similar films that they believe were unsuccessful. The audience of this article would agree with the dominant ideology about youth and crime being affiliated.

The article informs us about the riots in 2012 and The Guardian gives their opinions about the group of people (outcasters). It's a very negative approach to satisfy the reader's ideologies.

The article uses long paragraphs with each sentence probably because the audience of the newspaper would be able to read the whole article without losing focus and because they are interested in Plan B.

The article is formally structured to keep their educated audience interested in reading their newspaper. They use this language to take digs at Ben Drew but at the same time it reveals some background on Ben Drew. In addition, we see reference to his difficult childhood and how his movie relates to the area he grew up inferring the film reflects his life when he was younger. This is where the cross promotion comes from and there is also the reference to songs from his album 'Ill Manors' is featured in the film.

Daily Mail

Similar to The Guardian, the target audience would be from the age 25 and above. They would be of the upper/middle classes as they agree with the dominant ideology created by people in power. From the psychographics successful people would read this article.

This article, unlike The Guardian, absolutely tears Plan B's efforts in producing this film by giving it a negative review. It doesn't only mention it's disagreement with his political beliefs but also his music and film. It's as if they have strong hate for him. I believe this article is here to inform their audience about what Plan B is teaching youth culture but twisting his words. They would probably suggest Plan B made the film to influence the youth to commit crime.

To reinforce what they are saying, they chose pictures from the film that symbolises crime and the description for each image explains why it's dangerous.

The audience would agree with the dominant ideology shown in the article as they are right winged.
